FAQ

What is the AI Act?

The AI Act is the first comprehensive European law regulating artificial intelligence. It sets binding rules for the safe and responsible use of AI systems in Europe.

When do companies have to comply with the AI Act?

The AI Act will come into force on August 1, 2024. Initial obligations—such as the prohibition of certain applications and employee training—will apply from February 2025. Further obligations (e.g., transparency obligations) will follow in 2026.

Which AI systems are prohibited?

For example, systems for biometric categorization based on sensitive characteristics, indiscriminate creation of facial databases, emotional surveillance in the workplace, and social scoring programs are prohibited.

Do all companies have to act?

Yes – every company that uses AI must check whether its applications are affected. Strict requirements apply, especially for high-risk applications.

What exactly do companies need to do to be AI Act compliant?

Companies must conduct a risk analysis, ensure the compliance of their AI systems, fulfill transparency obligations, and inform and train their employees about the use of AI.

What happens if companies ignore the requirements of the AI Act?

Violations can result in heavy fines—up to 35 million euros or 7% of global annual turnover. They also risk reputational damage and loss of trust among customers and partners.

Why is early compliance an advantage?

Companies that prepare for the AI Act early on strengthen their market position, reduce legal risks and gain the trust of customers, investors and authorities.

Are there special reliefs for SMEs and startups?

Yes. The AI Act provides supportive measures and simplified procedures for small and medium-sized enterprises and startups to ensure their competitiveness.
